Marian was designed for large sizes only, but the concept for the family was always about reduction to the underlying skeleton, rather than size, so Marian Text applies these principles to make a family that works just as well at small sizes. Suddenly Marian is no longer just a beautiful series of display faces, but a useful text family, exploring classics of the serif form. In the original, nine styles of the serif genre were rendered as ultra thin slab serifs, from the Renaissance of the sixteenth century through to the Scotch Roman of the early nineteenth century. Marian Text is a compendium of Marian’s ‘greatest hits’: Marian Text 1554 depicts the old style of Garamond & Granjon; John Baskerville’s transitional form becomes Marian Text 1757; the modern of Bodoni, with swash capitals and all, becomes Marian Text 1800, and the early Moderns of the Scottish foundries of Alexander Wilson & Son of Glasgow, and William Miller of Edinburgh, become Marian Text 1812. And like the original, a black letter: Marian Text Black, referencing the forms of Hendrik van den Keere.

When Bloomberg Businessweek was starting work on their election issue in 2012, Richard Turley commissioned a monospaced version of their sans, with the aim of using it to make data look purely like data, untouched by human hands. Commercial Type had moved into an office in Chinatown in New York earlier that year; Christian Schwartz had noticed monospaced serif type on many signs in the neighborhood. Inspired by these awkwardly beguiling un-designed forms, he offered to draw a monospaced version of Publico Text as well, enabling data to look like data in Businessweek's serif face as well. Though it was not space-efficient enough for this special issue, it appeared in info graphics and in feature headlines in many subsequent issues. Greg Gadzowicz added the italics, which are optically corrected obliques, in keeping with the un-designed aesthetic, in 2014.

While many digital adaptations of the French Modern exist, few if any have explicitly referenced Molé Le Jeune’s italic, truly one of the most distinct and beautiful variants of the italic produced during this era. Its idiosyncrasies have been preserved in this contemporary interpretation: in addition to its uncommonly steep angle, it features distinct letterforms such as the sharp lowercase v and w.

The influence of master Italian punchcutter Giambattista Bodoni of Parma has only grown since his death in 1813. Though best known for his delicate, high-contrast Moderns, his early work had a character all its own, warmer and more organic, showing the influence of Pierre Simon Fournier in France. Caponi Display and Caponi Slab are similar in their lightest weights, but depart quickly into two very different approaches to weight and contrast. Though lower contrast than other contemporary Bodoni revivals, Caponi Display follows Bodoni’s approach to weight and contrast, with long, elegant ascenders and descenders.
